It’s time to start your creative journey! Applications for Poppen Programs in the Arts are open to all Big Reds in third through 11th grades.
Who is eligible?
- Students of Muskegon Public Schools who show talent in the fine or performing arts, and also show a desire to develop their talents through private study outside school.
- Students currently in 3rd through 11th grades.
- Students must be in good standing with their school with regard to conduct, grades, and attendance.
- The Sherman R. Poppen Scholarship is open to graduates of Muskegon
Public Schools who have participated in the Nancy K. Poppen Program
and are pursuing an arts major, minor or related activity at an accredited college, university, or traditional arts school.
What is included?
- Weekly lessons in theater, dance, creative writing, spoken word performance, photography, ceramics, visual arts, or music.
- Support for supplies, arts camps, and competitions.
- College visits and other arts and cultural outings.
How do I apply?
Nancy K. Poppen Program

There are two application deadlines per year for the Nancy K. Poppen Program:
- Nov. 1 is the deadline to apply to begin in the second semester of the school year.
- May 1 is the deadline to apply to begin the following fall semester.
- Applications may be filled out online by using the links below, by mail or scan/email, or delivered in person.
- Paper application folders are available in your school’s front office, or by making an appointment at the Poppen Programs Office.
- The application includes:
- The student application form and essay
- Three reference forms, to be completed by an arts teacher, and two other teachers or administrators/coaches/program leaders. Family members may not refer students.
- An in-person interview with the Poppen Programs Director and a parent or guardian present
Sherman R. Poppen Scholarship Fund
The deadline to apply for funding through the Sherman R. Poppen Scholarship Fund is Feb. 1 for consideration for the coming school year:
- The application includes an essay, reference letters, and interview.
- To renew your Sherman R. Poppen award, you must reapply each year by Feb. 1, and include your most recent grades and three reference letters from college instructors, mentors or professors.
